How long does therapy last for?

CBT is a short term therapy. The specific duration of your treatment is a discussion we have after your initial assessment. Typically, I tend to offer a course of 6 initial sessions, and then review the need for more treatment every 6 sessions thereafter. An average course of CBT treatment is usually between 6 - 20 sessions, but this is tailored to individual needs.

I strongly believe that having regular therapy sessions help people get better more quickly, which is why I encourage that sessions take place weekly (same day and time, where possible).

Are my sessions confidential?

Yes, all sessions are confidential. It's up to you if you would like me to inform your GP.

For ethical and professional reasons, I ask for your GP details as part of the registration process.

I would need to speak to your GP in the rare circumstance where I became seriously concerned about harm coming to you or others around you, if you were involved in a serious crime or if your records were requested by a court. In these cases I would aim to discuss this with you first.

What if I want to stop therapy/CBT isn't for me?

Whilst CBT is the most recommended treatment for depression and anxiety difficulties, it is not always the right approach for everyone. The initial phone consultation followed by an  in-depth assessment gives us the chance to work out if CBT is the right approach for you/the difficulties you are experiencing. I also review therapy every 6 sessions or so with clients, to check that CBT is still working for them. If CBT isn’t for you at this particular time in your life, then you are under no obligation to continue sessions, and we can discuss what alternative therapeutic approaches you may find beneficial elsewhere.

Can you offer urgent help outside of sessions?

Unfortunately I am not able to offer crisis support outside of your session time. In therapy, we can make a plan together about what you can do to keep yourself safe. For urgent support, I would recommend:

  • Attend your local A & E

  • Requesting an emergency appointment with your GP

  • Contact the Samaritans on 116 123 - free, 24 hour line

  • Contact CALM on 0800 58 58 58 - free helpline 5pm-midnight
